Staff Selection Commission (SSC) : An Introduction

 Dear friends, Today I am going to have a brief insight on how SSC functions. You may think this information unnecessary but it will help in your exam preparation. This is my first blog post so if there is any error in the post please let me know via comments section. Staff Selection Commission is an organization under Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) of Government of India to recruit staff for various posts in the various Ministries and Departments of the Government of India and in Subordinate Offices.

Brief History

Staff Selection Commission (SSC) was set up in 1977 to conduct examinations for various government jobs. Previously it was called Subordinate Services Commission which was set up by the government of India in November 1975 on the recommendation of the 47th report of the Estimates Committee of Parliament. Later, on September, 26, 1977 it was renamed as Staff Selection Commission.


Functions of SSC

 

 The main responsibilities of Staff Selection Commission are as follows:

(i) To make recruitment to Group B (non-gazetted - both technical & non-technical) & group C (non-technical) posts in departments of Government of India‚ its attached and subordinate offices by conducting Competitive examinations.

(ii) To conduct Limited Departmental Competitive Examinations for‚
  • Promotion from Group D to LDC Grade‚ 
  •  Promotion from LDC to UDC Grade and
  • Promotion from Stenographer Grade D to Stenographer Grade C.
 (iii) To conduct Periodical Skill Test in English & Hindi.


 Organizational Structure


 SSC has its headquarters located at New Delhi. It is headed by a Chairman with 2 members and a Secretary-cum-Controller of examinations. His post is equivalent to the level of Additional Secretary to the Government of India.


Regional Network 

 

For smooth functioning‚ Staff Selection Commission has a nationwide network of 7 Regional offices located at Allahabad‚ Banglore‚ Chennai‚ Guwahati‚ Kolkata‚ Mumbai and New Delhi. It also has 2 Sub- Regional offices at Chandigarh & Raipur. Each Regional office is headed by a Regional Director and Sub - Regional office by a Depty Director.
 

Main responsibilities of Staff Selection Commission Regional/ Sub -Regional offices include providing administrative support to the headquarters for performing various activities like receipt of application from the candidates‚ issue of admit cards‚ booking of venues for examinations‚ appointment of invigilators and inspecting officers at various examination centres. Regional offices are also responsible for conducting interviews‚ PETs, medical examinations, wherever required.
